Content Management System

A Content Management System lets you take control over your website. You can login and change the content of your website whenever you want, add and delete pages and upload pictures, all without having to go back to your web developer.

There are many different types of Content Management Systems (CMS)s. Some are proprietary, some are open-source, some let you edit in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) mode, some have a special menu-driven system to change content.

Sydney Web Design has chosen Drupal as the preferred Content Management System. Drupal is an open-source CMS, with an active developer community, with standards-adhering search-engine-friendly components, and a simple, flexible interface.

From an extremely affordable $750 + GST, Sydney Web Design can build the following site:

There are lots of extra options available in Drupal. Have a look at Christmas Australia. It was my first Drupal site, incorporating a blog, forum, picture gallery, static pages, contact page and a custom event search.

You may wish to choose from one of the standard layouts/themes/templates/skins provided with Drupal, or one of Sydney Web Design Drupal layouts (as they are developed), or you may wish to purchase a third-party template from say OS Skins or CMS Lounge.

The preferred hosting is at Jumba, with prices for business hosting from as little as $10/month.

The simplest preferred development steps are:

  1. You advise the functional requirements for your site
  2. You advise any keywords you would like to target for search engines, and your perceived competitors
  3. You choose a layout theme or suggest a colour scheme change to an existing theme, or nominate sites that you like
  4. Sydney Web Design mocks up a layout based on your input. Up to three layouts may be proposed
  5. You purchase a domain, and create a hosting account at Jumba
  6. Sydney Web Design logs in to your hosting account and installs Drupal and the layout, and configures the selected options

Feedback will be provided at milestones during development. Payment is due in three stages. 30% prior to work commencing, 30% midway, and 40% when site is complete. Payment through PayPal is preferred.

Additional services may be available at an extra cost after the initial site has been built. For example entering site content, search engine optimisation, Google AdWords advertising, directory submission and article submission and software upgrades.

As with many open-source software solutions, occasionally security updates are announced. It is recommended that you subscribe to the Drupal Newsletter to keep up to date with security releases. Sydney Web Design is available at an hourly rate to install security updates, on request.
